 2017 Preview 


       Monroe Academy completed the 2016 season with a 11-2 record. Last year Monroe Academy captured the region two title and a number one seed in the Class AAA playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-0 record. Last year the Monroe Academy Volunteer reached the AISA-AAA State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Bessemer Academy in the State Championship game 28-7 in Troy.

       Over the past two seasons the Volunteer have gone 24-3 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Monroe Academy has gone a combined 81-10. Their 89.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class AAA over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Monroe Academy has managed to compile a record of 195-105. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class AAA and 6th in the AISA. Their last losing season was 2006.

       The Volunteer are led by head coach Mitchell Tuberville who is entering his twelveth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 110-26 over the past eleven seasons at Monroe Academy. Under his direction the Volunteer have qualified for the playoffs a total of nine times. They have won eight region crowns with Coach Tuberville. Coach Tuberville has won two state championships at Monroe Academy, the last coming in 2013.

       Coach Tuberville's overall record as a head football coach in eleven season stands at 110-26 (80.9%). His 110 wins rank th among active coaches in the AISA.

       The Monroe Academy Volunteer will play in Class AAA region two during the 2017 season.

       The Volunteer enter the 2017 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak. Monroe Academy has won 15 consecutive region games. They have won 27 straight games on their home turf at Volunteer Stadium.

       While most teams rebuild during the off season, Monroe Academy has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Volunteer enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one of the favorites not only in their region but to play in the AISA title game in November. The Volunteer have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2007 and this year should be no exception.

       The Volunteer open the 2017 season against non-region opponent Glenwood School on Friday, August 18 Last year the Glenwood School Gators finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in second place in Class AAA region one. The Gators lost in the semi-finals round of the Class AAA playoffs to Monroe Academy by a score of 48-17.

       Monroe Academy and Glenwood School have met a total of 25 times on the football field. The Volunteer have a 18-7-0 record against the Gators. They last met in 2016 with Monroe Academy winning by a score of 48-17.

       Monroe Academy returns AISA All-State Senior athlete Dalton McKenzie. He was named to the second team last season. The Volunteer also return Senior quarterback Griffin McKenzie. He was named to the first team. The Volunteer also return Senior defensive lineman Macklin Watson. He was named to the second team.
